The structure of an animal’s foot determines the possibility of shapes in the tracks that it leaves. Experience teaches us that there is rarely a picture-perfect track on the ground. Knowledge of the foot’s structure enables us to identify the maker of the track, even when there is very little detail to work with. In this workshop we will study the structure of our indigenous mammals’ feet, utilizing photographic images we have created from the extensive collection of animal feet that we have collected over the years. Participants will also have the opportunity to handle actual (preserved) animal feet to better understand their structure.
|
With images of actual tracks, we will learn how to spot the key features that the feet left behind – a distinctive toe shape, the presence or absence of claws, the shape of the palm or heel pads, relative abundance of hair, texture of the flesh, negative space, etc.

This is an interactive program, with a small group size that will allow questions to be addressed as they arise. We will also provide take-home printed materials for your further exploration.
