The Great North Woods - Wilderness Tracking

Saturday, April 26, 2014, 9 am to 5:30 pm

This program will take place in the Connecticut Lakes region north of Pittsburg, New Hampshire, near the Canadian border. This area, above the 45th parallel, is the southern edge of the Great North Woods, the coniferous forest belt that stretches from Labrador to Alaska. This is the boreal forest of legend, a vast land of spruce and fir trees, pristine lakes, and rushing mountain streams. It is wild and rugged, and holds some of the last remnants of true wilderness in the continental United States. Here, moose and black bear grow to huge sizes, rare pine marten are resident, and there are always rumors of wolves and mountain lions passing through. The forest is daunting, yet inviting at the same time. It is an unforgettable experience.

The program will be held in a mountainous area that routinely holds snow through the end of April and into the beginning of May - in fact, there is so much snow that it is often inaccessible by motor vehicle through most of the winter. Indeed, both the Farmerís Almanac and serious climatologists are predicting cold temperatures and above-average snowfalls this winter. Bring your snowshoes - we may need them, as we have on all our previous trips here in the month of April. Above all, bring a spirit of adventure!

Location: Pittsburg, New Hampshire

Pittsburg NH is approximately 4 and a half hours north of Boston, Massachusetts, 4 hours north of Brattleboro, Vermont, and 3 hours north of Concord, NH. We can provide lodging recommendations upon request.

Activity Level: Moderately strenuous (with or without snowshoes) and (of course) bush-whacking

Fee: $50 per person
