Tracking Weekend Fall Campout

Saturday, October 12, 2013, 8 am to Sunday, October 13, 2013, 5 pm

Join us for a full weekend immersed in the fascinating world of animal tracks and sign. We will drive to our rustic campsite (outhouses, no showers) to set up camp, then spend the rest of the weekend tracking in the forest and on the shores of the Quabbin. This is a unique camping area, remote with limited access, little-utilized and surprising in its quietude and surrounding beauty. A wide variety of animal habitats include mixed deciduous upland forest, vernal pools, woodland swamps, bogs, hemlock ravines, and rocky ledges. The West Branch of Fever Brook runs through the area, creating an ever-changing mosaic of life. Wildlife abounds, including otters, moose, bobcats, bald eagles, and bears.

with Nick & Valerie Wisniewski, directors of Walnut Hill Tracking & Nature Center

A night hike brings us to a high promontory overlooking the Quabbin, with a spectacular vista stretching to the horizon, with no houselights or roads visible, only vast expanses of water and forest illuminated by the night sky. The only sounds are the wind and perhaps the faint lapping of waves on the shore, and distant voices of Owls, Coyotes, Loons, and other denizens of the night. This is the spirit of the Quabbin, the "accidental wilderness."

Location: New Salem, Massachusetts, adjacent to the Quabbin

Participants must provide their own camping equipment (tent and sleeping bag) and should bring a lunch to eat on the trail both days. We will provide dinner Saturday and breakfast Sunday at the campsite, and ensure that you are comfortable and well-taken-care-of. This program is meant for adults of all tracking levels, although well-behaved, mature children under close parental supervision are, of course, welcome.

Fee: $125 per person (includes tracking instruction, campsite fee, dinner, and breakfast)

Activity Level: Moderate, with off-trail bush-whacking included
